There are several, licensed hearing health professionals with different levels of expertise. These include: otolaryngologists (ENT doctors), audiologists and hearing instrument specialists.
Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS)
A hearing instrument specialist is a licensed professional who is trained to test for hearing loss. They are also able to evaluate hearing loss and are experts in custom-fitting programing hearing aids.
Audiologist (AuD)
Audiologists are now required to obtain a doctoral degree in audiology in order to sit for the licensing exam. They do not hold a medical degree but they have similar responsibilities to hearing instrument specialists with specific expertise in hearing and balance disorders.
Otolaryngologist (ENT doctor)
A hearing instrument specialist is a licensed professional who is trained to test for hearing loss. They are also able to evaluate hearing loss and are experts in custom-fitting programmed hearing aids.
